boxscore

Park McAllister, Big Sky Player of the WeekSACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State freshman quarterback Ryan Leadingham's 22-yard touchdown pass to Fred Amey in the first overtime lifted the Hornets past Saint Mary's, 13-6, in front of 15,173 spectators at Fred Anderson Field on Saturday night.

The nonconference contest was the season opener for both teams, as Sacramento State begins the year 1-0 while the Gaels fall to 0-1.

Saint Mary's was on top, 6-0, until Leadingham connected with Amey on a 16-yard touchdown pass with 3:01 remaining in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 6-6. Paul Kerr's extra point attempt was wide right, and the game remained tied until the end of regulation.

The Gaels opened the game's scoring with 2:57 left in the first half on a 35-yard touchdown run by Gus Papanikolas. Chris Kobe's conversion run failed, and the score remained 6-0 until Leadingham's touchdown pass to Amey.

Sacramento State and Saint Mary's both had scoring opportunities early in the game. Leadingham had a pass intercepted by Greg Kavulich at the goal line with 3:34 left in the first quarter to thwart a Hornet drive, while Papanikolas had a pass intercepted by Jason Rowell at the Sacramento State 14-yard line early in the second quarter to stop a Saint Mary's scoring threat.

Ezekiel Arevalo missed on a 47-yard field goal attempt with 1:04 left in the third quarter for Saint Mary's on the Gaels' other scoring chance. Hornet place kicker Paul Kerr missed a 39-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter and a 41-yard attempt in the third quarter for the Hornets on Sacramento State's other scoring opportunities.

Leadingham finished the game 14-of-22 for 185 yards and two touchdowns passing, while rushing for 41 yards on nine carries. Papanikolas finished 6-of-13 for 70 yards passing for the Gaels, while also gaining 67 yards on 22 carries.

Andre Coleman of Saint Mary's was the game's leading rusher, finishing with 175 yards on 18 carries to lead a Gael rushing attack that netted 322 yards on the ground. Derard Barton was the leading rusher for Sacramento State, finishing the game with 81 yards on 19 carries.

Leadingham became the first freshman quarterback to open the season as a starter. The Covina, Calif., native showed his nerves early and was replaced in the third quarter by sophomore Ferni Garza. Leadingham returned to the field in the fourth quarter to help lead the team's comeback.

Defensively, Park McAllister and Vince Andrews led a defense which allowed just one score in the game. McAllister ended the night with 9.0 tackles including two for loss. Andrews led the team with 9.5 tackles.

As a team, Sacramento State tied a school record with just two penalties and set the school mark by being tagged for just nine yards of infractions (five of which came on a deliberate delay of game).
