Stockton Edges Modesto by a Sliver, Again
The Modesto Nuts (31-33/69-65) made the Ports (40-25/76-59) wait, but Kurt Suzuki’s line drive single into centerfield gave the Ports a 6-5 victory in ten innings, clinching home field advantage for Stockton in the first round of the Northern Division playoffs. The win lowered the Ports magic number toward clinching the second half championship to three over the San Jose Giants, who visit Banner Island Ballpark this weekend.
Luke Appert began the bottom of the tenth inning with a walk. Nuts reliever then walked Eddie Cornejo and Jed Morris to load the bases with one out. After taking the first pitch, Kurt Suzuki drilled the next one into centerfield for his second hit of the night, driving home Lloyd Turner. Suzuki was 2-5 in extending his hit streak to six games.
The Ports came from behind all night. Modesto’s Joe Gaetti solo home run to leftfield put the Nuts up 5-4 in the ninth. However, Jed Morris got the Ports rally started with a double into the rightfield corner. Kurt Suzuki sacrificed him to second and, with the Nuts infield drawn in, Danny Putnam bounced a single up the middle to tie the game and send it to extra innings. Putnam was 3-5 with a homerun, two runs scored and three RBI and has now hit safely in eight straight games.
In the fifth, Modesto’s slugging thirdbaseman Ian Stewart put Modesto up 4-1 with a three run homerun just to the left of the batter’s eye in center field, but the Ports answered right back. After Jed Morris doubled, Danny Putnam launched a towering fly ball homerun onto the Sprint HomeRun Hill in rightcenter. After Vasili Spanos reached, Dustin Majewski doubled him home with a flare to left to tie the game.
Modesto scored first, with a run in the second. The Nuts led 1-0 until the fourth when Luke Appert drew a bases loaded walk to even the game at 1-1. Although Appert was 0-2, he drew three walks, began the winning rally and drove home a run.
Elvis Avendano earned the win for a scoreless tenth. Neither starter, Scot Drucker for the Ports and Stephen Register for the Nuts, made it past the fifth.
