THIS TIME, BEAVERS MAKE TWO-RUN LEAD STICK
Portland snaps four-game skid with 7-5 win over I-Cubs
PORTLAND, Ore. - Josh Barfield had three hits and drove in a pair of runs
and the Portland Beavers snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating the
Iowa Cubs 7-5 Sunday afternoon at PGE Park.
Dustin Delucchi was 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored for the Beavers (52-56), who lost each of their previous two games when carrying a two-run lead into the ninth inning.
In his first start for the Beavers, lefty Ryan Snare was the winner. Snare (2-6), who was signed by the Beavers on July 26, worked five innings and gave up four runs and eight hits.
Scott Cassidy worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save of the season and just the sixth of his eight-year career.
Scott McClain was 3-for-4 and belted two home runs for the Cubs, notching a two-run blast off the scoreboard in the fifth and adding a solo shot in the seventh.
Starter John Koronka (7-10) was roughed up early in the loss. The southpaw was lifted after three innings and six runs allowed.
Each of the first five batters reached base for Portland in the first. Delucchi got things started with a double, and Barfield, Paul McAnulty and Jon Knott had RBI singles. Michel Hernandez’ sac fly to center plated McAnulty to cap the four-run frame.
It was more of the same in the second inning. Wilson Valdez reached on a leadoff double and moved to third on a sac bunt by Snare. Delucchi drove in Valdez with a single to center and Barfield made it 6-0 with a double to gap in left-center.
Snare ran into trouble in the fourth, as the Cubs (48-58) narrowed the gap to 6-2. Ben Grieve and Nate Frese had back-to-back RBI singles as Snare allowed four straight batters to reach base to start the inning. Portland third baseman Sean Burroughs prevented a third run from scoring when he flagged down a grounder on the line and spun around with a throw home to get Grieve trying to score from third.
Portland tacked on a run in the sixth when Delucchi reached on a one-out walk and scored when McClain misplayed Ben Johnson’s routine grounder at third with two down.
NOTES: The Beavers added catcher Nick Trzesniak to their roster from Class AA Mobile on Sunday … McAnulty has an eight-game hitting streak … San Diego optioned pitcher Tim Stauffer to Portland on Sunday as they activated pitcher Adam Eaton from the disabled list … the Cubs, who rank last in the league in home runs, went 57 innings without one until McClain’s first clout on Sunday … the Beavers drew 4,892 on Sunday and have averaged 7,140 fans a game over the last four contests ... Snare was the 17th different pitcher to start for the Beavers this season.
