September 1, 2004: Italy Tops BMTG Medal Count
final results | most and least impressive medals
The Italian Olympic team, playing for Throcksmorton, won the first ever BMTG Olympic Medal Count competition, where BMTG participants had the country from their ancestry playing for them. To ensure that the Ukraine Brothers would not be guaranteed to end in a tie, it was decided to have Ahchie represented by Ukraine, while Brother Nature was represented by another ancestral tie, Ireland.
Throcksmorton, represented by Italy, won the competition for the 2004 Summer Olympics, bringing in an impressive 32 medals. Second place went to Ahchie (Ukraine), with 23 medals. Little Jerry (Brazil) came in third with 10 medals.
Albuquerque Tom (France) would have finished first based on raw medal count, but saw all of the medals stripped away. According to BMTG regulations, countries undermining U.S. efforts during a war will be sanctioned with a deduction of two Olympic medals per month from the start of the war until the end of the next cycle of Olympic games. The United States began the war in Iraq in March 2003 and the most recent Olympic games ended in August 2004. Since France undermined the U.S. war on terror they will be deducted a total of 34 medals for these Olympic games (they won 33), so their final official medal count is -1. Since France is at negative medals, they will lose another medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics, plus interest of 1 medal per month.
